Cockfosters Res. 2
Just four weeks ago, the Reserves suffered the
indignity of being on the wrong end of a 6-0 thrashing at Chalk Lane
against Hadley. Last night saw some pride restored as goals fro Danny
Curbelo and Selcuk Ulug were on target in the 2-0 win.

Bedford 5 Cockfosters 5
On an astonishing afternoon at McMullen Park,
Cockfosters turned in a blistering first-half performance that saw them
go in at the break with a 5-1 lead. Dave Pigden started the ball rolling
in the fourth minute./ Bedford quickly levelled through Mark Read before
Cockfoster's leading marksman, Dean Barker, completed a first half
hat-trick with Jon Curtis also on target. Good as Cockfosters were at
going forward the first half gave clues of what was possibly to come as
Bedford also missed several one-on-ones in the first half. The score did
possibly flatter at this stage as it might easily been 5-5 at the
interval. The warning signs went unheeded and Read scored his second as
Cockfosters dominance subsided. John Vooght made it 5-3 with 20 minutes
remaining. It looked as though Cockfosters woulssee it through but two
late goals in the last three minutes from Ashley Kersey and Vooght
again, brought the scores level. A great game for the neutrals, but
spare a thought for the managers.......

Cockfosters Res. 1 Royston
Town Res. 3
Cockfosters and Royston shared a fairly even first
45 although neither 'keeper was unduly troubled. Royston looked a solid
outfit and as the game moved into the second period the visitors took
firm control as they glided into a three goal lead. Obi Offomata got one
back for Cockfosters but this served more as a consolation rather than
threatening to get back int the game.

The worst possible start as lowly Benfica rattled
Cockfosters with a blistering start with goals in the 1st and 10th
minutes. Things got a lot worse as the hosts stretched the lead to three
after 35 minutes. Rhys Shirley-Clarke managed to keep a foothold on the
game reducing the deficit just before the interval. However, it
was never going to be Cockfosters night as Benfica edged further ahead
with a dubious penalty. Two late goals from Dean Barker boosted his
outstanding personal tally - but for the rest there was precious little
to get excited about.

Kings Langley Res. 1
Cockfosters Res. 3
The Reserves turned in another Jekyll and Hyde
performance against a strong Kings Langley side and this time it was the
more attractive team that turned up. Obo Offomata gave Cockfosters the
lead midway through the first half with the home side levelling moments
after the break directly from a corner. Still playing well, Cockfosters
restored the advantage when Tom Boxer scored the best goal of the
evening heading home Rhys Shirley-Clarke's cross after 65 minutes. Jamil
Latif entered the fray as a substitute and after 80 minutes his surge
into the area was halted by being upended by a goalkeeper who was lucky
to only see yellow. Nathan Eno smashed home the penalty to retain his
record as the Reserves leading scorer. In the closing minutes Selcuk
Ulug saw a red card for two bookable offences, but by then it was too
late to affect the outcome.

From Poacher to Gamekeeper
He used to be the bane of all Referees but since
former Cockfosters player Mick Russell packed up
through injury and took up the whistle himself, his outlook towards
match officials has taken on a completely different view. Mick has
progressed through the ranks and is now officiating in the Championship.
At the weekend he was the man in the middle for the Newcastle v
Blackpool game and acquitted himself very well. Just proves that
leopards do sometimes change their spots. Any aspiring referees within
the Club should take note... are you listening Alex?

Cockfosters 0 Hadley 0
The sun shone down on a glorious afternoon as
Cockfosters entertained the league leaders. There were no goals to
accompany the weather as Hadley were forced to their second goaless draw
in 48 hours. There was not much to choose between the teams in the first
half but the second period saw Cockfosters looking the more likely to
score and only an incredible save by the Hadley 'keeper, Robinson,
prevented Nick Nicou being the match-winner for Cockfosters. Not a lot
to choose between the sides with the draw probably the fairest
outcome.....See Match Reports - Courtesy of

A spirited Cockfosters performance seriously dented
Oxhey Jet's title ambitions. Oxhey started the stronger and Cockfosters
had to battle to cope with the pace of the Oxhey front runners early on.
But as the half developed, Cockfosters began posing their own threats
and midway through the first-half, Rhys Shirley-Clarke burst into the
box only to be hauled down by the 'keeper, Joe Marsh. Selcuk Ulug's
resultant spot kick being well saved by Marsh. The breakthrough came
after 53 minutes with Matt Brown drilling home an angled drive. The game
was never a classic in terms of quality but for all out endeavour there
was certainly plenty on show. As the game wore on, it was the Jets who
posed the biggest threat and came nearest when hitting the woodwork. But
Cockfosters stood their ground and on the night - they were not to be
denied. A minutes silence was held before the kick off as a mark of
respect for Froz Boxer who lost her father on Tuesday.

Cockfosters 2 Amersham Town 2
Having conceded eight goals in their previous
outing, Amersham Town might have feared the worst after Dean Barker
scored his 40th goal of the season after just two minutes to give
Cockfosters the perfect start. However the goal deluge did not
materialise and at the break Cockfosters still led by Barker's goal.
Amersham drew level after 62 minutes through Andy Parry and within two
minutes led after Parry was on target again. Cockfosters eventually
clawed their way back as Rakim Richards levelled after 77 minutes to
grab the draw that seemed more like two points lost.

although Crawley Green responded soon after from the spot, Matt Brown

Cockfosters were clawed back as Crawley levelled. Rowan Taylor the gave

the win until those two late strikes sent the visitors back up the M1

Sporting London e Benfica 1
In the end, it turned out to be a comfortable win
against opponents that should have been swept aside within the first
thirty minutes. The game had no flow whatsoever and it took 35 minutes
to force the breakthrough as Dean Barker was scythed down in the area.
Sporting were lucky to retain a full compliment as Aaron Ewing appeared
to be head butted as the spot kick was being organised. After a lengthy
delay, Barker smashed the ball home for the opening goal. Cockfosters
extended the lead after 55 minutes when Jon Curtis thundered home a
classic header from Barker's right wing cross. On a rare breakaway, Chez
Haydn burst through the middle to reduce the arrears for Sporting after
68 minutes. That turned out to be Haydn's last touch of the afternoon as
he was red carded for violent conduct when trying to grab the ball from
Danny Curbelo prior to the restart. There were numerous stoppages, as
chances came and went before Dave Pigden eventually wrapped up the
points on 82 minutes in what was a very long afternoon.....More

It's said that seeing is believing. Well, I saw it
and I still don't believe it. With seven scoring attempts, Hadley were
successful with six and with the generosity of goalkeeping blunders and
defensive lapses we can only be grateful that the game lasted only 90
minutes. Two goals adrift after seven minutes and another on the
half-hour, the points were already settled. In terms of possession and
territory, Cockfosters had the lion's share, but another trio of lapses
in the dying minutes put the lid on a miserable evening, And, oh yes,

Saturday's disappointment at Harpenden was

turned out a comfortable 4-1 win against Buckingham Athletic. Aaron

as goals in the 10th and 55th minutes put Cockfosters in control. Dean
Barker made it 3-0 after 80 minutes with Adam Bone getting one back for
Buckingham three minutes later. There was still time for Dave Pigden to
score after 89 minutes to put the three points to bed. The evening was
marred by a serious injury to Buckingham's Ollie Prentice, who suffered
a broken leg. All at Cockfosters wish Ollie well and a speedy return to

There was no indication early on that Cockfosters

minutes, Dave Pigden(pictured bundled the ball home to put Cockfosters
firmly in the driving seat. Bedford were still a major threat as only
some wayward finishing and some fine goalkeeping from Danny Curbelo
helped to maintain Cockfosters advantage. Those opening goals drew the
sting from Bedford's threat and when Dean Barker brought his personal
tally to 33 goals with two second half strikes, the points were firmly

across the face of the goal for Dean Barker to stoop to head home. Five

Two glorious strikes in quick succession from Joe Smith and Dean Barker

Ampthill when Paul Munday converted a penalty after 67 minutesJ With
fifteen minutes remaining, Jon Curtis set up the fourth with a great run

On a freezing winters evening, Cockfosters Reserves
turned on a fine performance to warm the Chalk Lane faithful. Selcuk
Ulug opened the scoring after 12 minutes heading home Nathan Eno's free
kick. Midway through the half Danny Curbelo swept the ball home to
double the lead. A quick three goal salvo around the hour mark saw Luke
Papini hook the ball into the net from the edge of the box. Danny
Curbelo then made the most of some confusion in the Stony rearguard and
Nathan Eno drilled home the fifth to round off the scoring....

Osborne replaced the injured Chris Stead in goal at the start of the

In a game where the Division's two leading

Colney were on view, the prospect of goals was on the menu.
Disappointingly, in a game that will not linger long in the memory,
there were only two attempts on target all afternoon and they decided
the outcome. Danny Fitzgerald after eighty minutes and Russ Gallagher
deep into injury time gave Colney the win they just about deserved.

Just about the right result in an entertaining
afternoon at Chalk Lane. Cockfosters trailed three times before securing
a last minute equaliser from a quickly taken Nathan Eno free kick. Aaron
Ames opened the scoring for Colney after 10 minutes and that lead was
held until the 43rd minute when Tom Boxer levelled. There were chances
for each side before Colney took the lead via Cain Davey from the spot
halfway thru the half. Rhys Shirley-Clark was hauled down and Nathan Eno
tucked the resultant spot kick away after 75 minutes. Five minutes
later, Cockfosters made a mess of a right wing cross that allowed Davey
to put Colney in front for the third time. With the clock ticking down,
Eno was given the go ahead to take a quick free kick that found the
bottom corner of the net after 89 minutes. No complaints from either
side, Well done.....See Reserves Match Report...

The battling performance belied some recent
performances as Cockfosters grappled with a very useful Aylesburt side.
Aylesbury looked sharper in the early exchanges and although there was
little to choose between the sides, Aylesbury grabbed the lead after
fifteen minutes. Cockfosters bounced straight back and within seven
minutes were level. Tom Boxer headed against the bar and with the home
defence unable to clear, Kyriacos Portou headed home from close range.
Rhys Shirley-Clake had a shot tipped onto the bar and over as
Cockfosters built a head of steam and were now the more dangerous side.
Two baffling second half decisions deprived Cockfosters nailed on
Penalties as first Boxer and then Shirley-Clarke were sent
sprawling in the box. The decisive moment came after 63 minutes when
Portou got to the by-line and fed Boxer at the near post to force home
what was to be the winner. Aylesbury finished the stronger and rattled
the frame of Chris Stead's goal, but Cockfosters saw out the closing
minutes for a deserved and thoroughly enjoyable win.

planning appeal for the development of a new stand, has been upheld and
we now have the green light to go ahead.

Relegation for Cockfosters
Despite some debate at the S.S.M.L. A.G.M., it was
decreed that Cockfosters will be relegated in accordance with the F.A.
guidelines on the grounds that they failed to achieve the 'ground
Grading' requirements for Clubs at Step 5. As a direct consequence,
Colin Bell has resigned as Chairman of the Football Club.
Wednesday 17th June 2009
A Statement from the chairman:
Having become totally frustrated by the position we
find ourselves in with regard to the proposed League constitution for
the coming season, I set out the 'Open Letter' that I have sent to
every Club in the League and to all S.S.M.L. committee members.
"Having seen the proposed structure for the
S.S.M.L. for the coming season, I find it incredible that the League
have swallowed the F.A dictat that Kentish Town will be
allowed to continue to play at Copthall Stadium, claiming it as
their ‘home ground’ and by so doing protecting their grading status. If
the League were to check they will find that Kentish Town played only a
handful of home games at Copthall all of last season. The fact that they
were deducted eleven points through playing inelligable players seems to
have been irrelevant. Had they been deducted 111 points the scenario
remains the same – They are bottom of the league – do not have a
creditable home base and are employing the tactics of a Sunday morning
pub side. Should the same situation arise next year – ie. Kentish Town
finish bottom – adopt the same ‘mis-leading team sheets’ tactics, of
which the continuing Secretary must have been aware, as he submitted the
team sheets - continue ‘playing’ at Copthall , then I feel for the
designated ‘relegated’ clubs. It would appear that as long as you have
kept in line with the jobsworths at the F.A. then crack on.
It’s about time someone cried
HALT! to all of the ridiculous pressures that are being heaped on our
clubs. Who knows what added demands the F.A. will expect in the future;
but as sure as night follows day, they will surely arrive. Do the
officers of the S.S.M.L. really believe that by their submissive
response to the blazored brigade at the F.A,. that hordes of spectators
will suddenly be descending on Chalk Lane or any other ground. No, far
from it – it has to be ego based and that they are protecting their own
blazer and tie. In these times of financial difficulty I defy anyone to
make a case why clubs at our level should fork out thousands of pounds
that we don’t have, in order to satisfy the wish list of a load of
jobsworths at Soho Square. I totally accept that grounds should be safe
and comfortable places to go, but do we really need to be geared up in
case Manchester United come knocking when we get that dream cup draw?
These people are not protecting the grass roots levels – they are
destroying it.
One day in the not too distant
future, the FA’s bubble will burst with a mighty pop. Try this for a
scenario… Imagine a country is facing its biggest recession for decades.
Times are indeed hard, weekends for those fortunate enough to still be
in work are no longer spent on the terraces at Old Trafford or The
Emirates – that would be a frivolous waste of precious money…. But we
STILL LOVE THE GAME so we head to our local recreation ground with a
dozen or so others to watch our local team. OK, its not Ronaldo and Co.
but it’s a bloody good contest with a group of committed people playing
football and that’s where it all starts – grass roots. The following
week the gates are locked shut, the clubhouse boarded up but why??
Apparently the FA were expecting 200 adoring fans here next season who
will demand covered seating - we tried to argue, but they knew
better, as such the club and its 3 teams no longer exists.’ Good job
that will never happen eh? And if it did, I’m sure the good people at
the FA would be the first to look up the chairman or secretary and ask
for the addresses of every one of the 200 fans, so they could apologise
in person for depriving them and their children, the players and
everyone else involved with the club, of the game, their hopes and
dreams because they obviously know best.
It’s true that we at Cockfosters
are victims of this mindset and indeed are feeling aggrieved, relegated
after finishing above the relegation places really hurts. But if it
takes someone with some balls to stand up and be counted, then I will be
at the front of that particular queue.
To the best of my knowledge, only
Holmer Green, from day one, have refused to play the F.A “Jump – How
high?” game. What really would have happened if we had all stood
shoulder to shoulder and said enough is enough. How is having an empty
200 seater stand improving standards when twenty-two club treasurers
dread the arrival of the bank statement each month? Admittedly, we at
Cockfosters, would have fallen in line had we not been victims of local
planning bureaucracy. It’s often said, that things happen for a reason
and who knows what the future holds. At the moment there’s no sign of a
Roman Abramovich walking up our drive and there is a definite shortage
of money trees in the Cockfosters area – but at least our Treasurer gets
a decent nights sleep.
The officers of the S.S.M.L will
protest that their hands are tied by the F.A. but if they really cared
for the future of the game at our level, then I suggest a glance in the
mirror would give them an opportunity to reflect the real picture and
review their own conscience. Since when has common sense ever tied
anyone’s hands?
Hey – is that the coffee I can
smell?"
Colin Bell.

Well done to both of you.

Spartan South Midlands League - Premier Division
Holmer Green 2
Cockfosters 1
Cockfosters held the lead at half-time in this crucial relegation battle

but Holmer Green were allowed back and Andy Shed gave the hosts
the points with the winner in the last five minutes.

Cockfosters Res. 2
London Colney Res. 1
The Reserves came from behind once again to gain
points against London Colney. Joe Greer cancelled out Colney's early
lead and to be fair Cockfosters would have been glad for a point as
Colney missed many second half chances. The winner came in added time as
Terry Mireku finished off some great work from, Rowan Taylor to set up
the chance.

Spartan South Midlands League - Premier Division
Cockfosters 0
Broxbourne Borough V&E 2
Cockfosters were slowly out of the traps and went behind to a highly
controversial penalty when Ryan Wade was adjudged to have been brought
down by Paul Daley. Wade converted the kick which saw Cockfosters come
alive. Only the heroics of Obey Murefu, in the Borough goal, kept his
team in front. The second half offered much of the same, but from an
extremely generous free kick, Wade got the vital touch which the Asst.
Referee flagged as a goal. A frustrating night all round. Match report

Biggleswade Town 2
Cockfosters
welcomed back Dan O'Connor to Chalk Lane, but even his goalscoring
prowess was unable to have any impact against title chasing Biggleswade
Town. Biggleswade took the lead after 43 minutes after a dubious free
kick was headed goalwards by Charlie Morgan with Town's Glen Lamacraft
claiming a touch on its way. The game was settled after 63 minutes when
Kevin Cooper was presented with a gift. More misery for Cockfosters as
Steve Kessack saw red following one of many baffling refereeing
decisions. See Match report ......

previous nine outings, were sent reeling as goals from Luke Papini,
Michael Anastasiou, Daniel Florence rocked the newly crowned champions.

Spartan South Midlands League - Premier Division
Hertford Town 1
Cockfosters 1
No questions here about the battling qualities at
Hertingfordbury Park. True, Hertford dominated the first half and took
the lead through Darryl Mitchell's free kick after 35 minutes. It could
have been worse but Dave Hunt's penalty attempt after 43 minutes hit
Paul Daley's right hand post. The second half produced a fine
performance from Cockfosters who drew level through Rakim Richards after
83 minutes. Plenty of bright football, Hertford conjured most of the
chances but a point each was about right. Match report to follow......

Spartan South Midlands League - Premier Division
Tring Athletic 2
Cockfosters 1
Following a battling performance in the week at
Brimsdown, this was a real disappointment. The first half was well short
of what was required from a team in search of its own salvation. Danny
Hutchings was unlucky to slice a cross past Paul Daley to give Tring a
first half lead and Tring increased their lead with a questionable
second after the ball appeared to have crossed the goalline before a
goalmouth scramble made sure it did. Cockfosters at least battled in the
closing quarter and got one back from Danny Curbelo after 88 minutes -
but too late. Match report to follow......

Spartan South Midlands League - Premier Division
Brimsdown Rovers 2
Cockfosters 2
Cockfosters got off to the worst possible start as Rob Tebbett fired
Brimsdown ahead after just three minutes. Danny Curbelo met a free kick
from Aaron Ewing to head Cockfosters level after 31 minutes. Brimsdown
retook the lead with a Route One goal through Jamie O'Donoghue after 44
minutes. Cockfosters had the better of the second half and deservedly
levelled after 73 minutes through Matt Keogh's free kick to earn a vital
point. See Match report .....

A game that looked like being won by Jamie Brandon's curled shot ten

space of eight minutes to be gifted the points.

early goal gave Colney Heath the edge at half-time , but after the

goal from Billy Smythe gave Cockfosters a 5-2 win. Match report to

South Midlands Floodlight Cup - Senior Section - Round One
Cockfosters 1
Hertford Town 4
Fielding eight of the U18 squad, Cockfosters fared
much better than the final scoreline might suggest. Matt Kearney gave
Cockfosters the lead after 25 minutes. Daryl Mitchell scored twice for
Hertford, one a penalty, with Troy Alexander-Jarratt also on the
scoresheet before half-time. There was little goalmouth action in the
second half with Scott O'Donoghue adding the fourth just before the
final whistle. See Match report ....
Wednesday 18th March 2009
Spartan South Midlands League - Reserve Division One
Harpenden Town Res. 2
Cockfosters Res. 2
After going two goals down in thirty minutes,
Cockfosters staged a recovery that should have eventually turned into a
win. Dan Little reduced the arrears after 39 minutes heading home
following a corner and four minutes later, Rowan Taylor did exactly the
same to bring the sides level. There were several opportunities to claim
the win in the second half that went begging. As the game drew to its
conclusion, Tom Simmons saw red for a second bookable five minutes from
time. See Match report ....

Spartan South Midlands League - Premier Division
Cockfosters 1
Colney Heath 2
A goal in added time from Colney Heath's Richard
Howard scuppered Cockfosters expectations of a point from the game.
Earlier first half goals from Ant Muthusamy after 19 minutes for Heath
cancelled out by Ian Reddington's leveller after 39 minutes seemed to
have set the pattern for the evening. See Match report ....

Cockfosters 2 Chalfont St.
Peter 3
Cockfosters
were unable to improve on their recent hat-trick of wins when they came
up against against FA VASE favourites Chalfont St. Peter. Chalfont
exerted all of the early pressure with Cockfosters first half
performance best described as deflated. Chalfont took the lead after 15
minutes and Cockfosters were grateful that it remained just that until
the break. Nathan Eno levelled after 53 minutes but Chalfont
almost immediately, retook the lead. When Eno netted again it seemed
that Cockfosters were on course for a point but within a minute the
visitors scored the decisive goal. Match report to follow....

Spartan South Midlands League - Premier Division
Welwyn Garden City 1
Cockfosters 2
Cockfosters made it a hat-trick of wins within the space of six days.
The latest success came at Herns Lane where Joe Smith gave Cockfosters
the lead a minute into the second half. Eleven minutes later Danny
Curbelo gave Cockfosters a two goal cushion but that luxury was to last
for just five minutes as Stuart Blackburne hit back for Welwyn.
Cockfosters had to pull out all the defensive stops from there on but
Welwyn rarely hit the target. The pressure was eased as Welwyn were
reduced to ten after 85 minutes and the Reds then comfortably saw out
the last few minutes. See Match report.....

Cockfosters U18 2
St. Margaretsbury 1
Eventually, following three previous postponements,
the U18's game against St. Margaretsbury was completed. The 2-1 win that
resulted with goals from Daniel Florence and Terry Mireku saw the Reds
leapfrog above the Saints into second place in the league. Match report

Spartan South Midlands League - Premier Division
Cockfosters 4
Haringey Borough 3
Two goals down within six minutes in this crucial bottom of the table
derby and it looked as if the writing was on the wall for Cockfosters as
Haringey were at their throats from the first whistle. Slowly,
Cockfosters stirred and as the first half progressed Haringey were
having to dig deep to maintain their lead. Within a minute of the
restart, Aaron Ewing reduced the deficit and after 63 minutes, Danny
Curbelo equalised for Cockfosters. Some hesitancy in the home defence
allowed Paul Abbott to re-establish the lead for Borough after 73
minutes. Once again Cockfosters hauled themselves level when Rakim
Richards headed home after 83 minutes and three minutes later Danny
Curbelo headed home the winner. See Match report .....

Cockfosters 2
Hertford Town 1
Three
most needed points were won with a battling performance that saw
Cockfosters benefit from a goalkeeping howler and despite having to play
with ten for the last twenty minutes after Rakim Richards was dismissed
for two yellow cards. Goals after 21 and 25 minutes from Danny
Curbelo set Cockfosters on their way and although Hertford reduced
the arrears after 58 minutes a rearguard action earned a deserved win.

Leverstock Green 2
Having
got off to a bright start, Cockfosters were hit by two goals in a three

point it was uphill all the way as at one end Cockfosters continually
failed to find the target whereas at the other, Paul Daley made a string
of fine saves to keep Leverstock at bay. See match report......

On a wild night in Holmer Green, Cockfosters

Cockfosters had a stranglehold on the game after just six minutes. Terry
Creber from distance in the first minute and five minutes later Rakim
Richards headed home Creber's free kick to put Cockfosters 2-0 up. A
truly marvellous goal after 65 minutes from Selcuk Ulug seemed to have
put the game to bed only for Holmer to get one back two minutes later.
Cockfosters had to defend against a spirited Holmer Green and the
elements but finally sealed the win when Terry Creber scored to make it
4-1 after 88 minutes. See match report.....

Looking
to build on last weekend's win, Cockfosters had the better of the

was penalised and red-carded after 35 minutes. From the spot kick, the
Saints took a fortunate lead and left Cockfosters a daunting task. The
ten men battled well and there were chances at both ends, but the Saints
finally killed of a game they did not deserve to win with a breakaway
goal in the dying minutes. See match report....

set on what was to be a highly forgetable evening. Before the crowd had
swollen to about ten, Mesach Cole raced up the right wing, cut in and
sent a low drive beyond the dive of Danny Curbelo. With Cockfosters
failing to find any rythm, Adam Lawrence, in the Biggleswade goal, raced
to hoof a clearance three-quarters the length of the pitch for Emanuel
Langlais to win the race and stab the ball past Curbelo to give United a
2-0 lead. It did get better in the second half, JUST, but most of
Cockfosters efforts were confined to distance. On 75 minutes Rakim
Richards brought down Cole and Nathan Hilaire drove home the penalty to
round off a sorry affair. Match report to follow.....

Haringey Borough U18 1 a.e.t.
(Haringey Borough win 5-4 on penalties)
The U18's had to suffer the heartbreak of a penalty
shoot-out as they fell at the Quarter-Final stage of the Colwyn Cup. A
goalless first gave way to a much brighter second 45 which saw Tom Boxer
give the Reds a deserved advantage. However, the lead was short lived as
Haringey levelled with a fine goal. Extra time could not provide a
winner and so to the dreaded penalties which saw Haringey through. See

Spartan South Midlands League - Challenge Trophy - Semi Final
Cockfosters 2
Chalfont St. Peter 5
Facing the in-form team of the League, Cockfosters
found themselves two goals up after 24 minutes against Chalfont St.
Peter with goals from Matt Kearney and Danny Curbrlo. When it seemed
vital to maintain that advantage to the break the Reds were undone by
two highly dubious offside decisions that allowed the Saints to level
with goals from Charlie Strutton and Mick Swaysland. Unfortunate, but
not unjust, as an outstanding save from Paul Daley and two amazing
goal-line clearances from Rakim Richards kept Cockfosters in the hunt.
But that was as good as it got as Chalfont added three in the second
half from Paxton, Lewis and Wright to earn their place in the Final
against Tring Athletic. See match report....

Cockfosters 2
Hanwell Town 0
Having been without a point in their last seven outings, Cockfosters
turned in a performance that belied their lowly league position. It took
just ten minutes for Aaron Ewing to make the most of a hesitant defence
at a free kick to give Cockfosters the lead. On 26 minutes Danny Curbelo
fired Cockfosters into a two goal lead and that was to lay the basis of
a fine win. There were some scary moments but at the final whistle the
points were well deserved. See Match Report.....

Round
Cockfosters Res. 2 Broxbourne
Borough V&E Res. 3 a.e.t.
Cockfosters, fielding many of the U18's, eventually
succumbed to a much strengthened Broxbourne outfit. Cockfosters defence
was all over the place in the opening minutes and Danny Curbello made a
string of fine save to keep Cockfosters in the game. After the
early frights, Cockfosters were on top and the visitors survived until
the 39th minute when Obi Offomata fired past Mark Virgo to give the Reds
a lead at that stage, they deserved. Within a minute ot the restart
Nathan Eno headed Cockosters into a 2-0 lead. But then Broxbourne turned
up the heat and by the 75th minute had deservedly levelled through goals
from Damien Loxall. As is often the case, when extra-time is played, the
winner often comes in the opening moments of the added time. And so it
was as Mark Brennan slipped the ball past Curbello with barely a minute
of added time played to claim the win. Match report to follow.....

Cray Wanderers 3
Cockfosters 0
Cockfosters bowed out of the competition after a
spirited performance against Cray Wanderers, who are joint second in the
Ryman South Division One. Cockfosters were largely on the backfoot for
most of the first half before Tyrone Sterling made the most of a
defensive lapse to put Cray one up in the 40th minute. The second half
saw Cockfosters come more into the game and there was no further dangers
until the 83rd minute when Sterling reacted quickest to roll the ball
home for the clincher. With a few heads down, Cray began to turn the
screw and but for Paul Daley and the woodwork might have had three more
in the closing moments. As it was, Tom Whitnell came off the bench for
Cray to grab the third a couple of minutes from the final whistle.

Cockfosters are into the semi-final of the
Challenge Trophy after a thrilling game at Forde Park. Cockfosters drew
first blood after 15 minutes through the fortune of a Joe DeLaselle
own goal but tenaciously stuck to their task against high flying
Langford who levelled a minute before the interval. Within a ten minute
spell midway through the second half the lead was stretched to 3-1 with
goals from Dave Pigden and Jon Moniatis. Langford refused to lie down
and they responded with goals from DeLaselle and Lee Pateman to level.

Cockfosters and Ware eventually shared eight goals in a thriller at
Chalk Lane. Ware were 2-1 up at half-time with Kieran Bishop the
Cockfosters marksman. Bishop levelled for Cockfosters straight after the
restart before Sean Shields edged the Reds in front for the first time.
Ware levelled at 3-3 before Emmanuel Osei-Owuso seemed to have clinched
the win only for Ware to snatch a point in the closing moments.

Biggleswade United 2
A
Dan O'Connor hat-trick took Cockfosters to a well deserved win against
high-flying Biggleswade United. Cockfosters led twice in the first half
but each time were pegged back within two minutes of taking the lead.
O'Connor put Cockfosters in front for the third time after 57 minutes

Crawley Green 1
Cockfosters 2
Two
goals in the last few minutes rescued Cockfosters at Crawley
Green in a game they fully deserved to win. Cockfosters
dominated the first half but failed to cash in and
eventually went behind after 67 minutes. It seemed that
Cockfosters would exit the competition until Dan O'Connor
grabbed a deserved equaliser with 88 minutes on the clock.
With extra-time looming, O'Connor was hauled down and
converted the resultant penalty one minute into added time.

Leighton Town U18 5
Cockfosters U18 1
Forced to ring the changes through
injury and non-availability, the U18s restructured defence was found
wanting as four goals were shipped in the first half. Although the the
scoreline somewhat flattered the home side, Cockfosters defensive
frailties were easily exposed. Kieran Dior-Bishop clawed one back but
that was to prove scant consolation as they exited the competition at
the first hurdle. Match report to follow....

Biggleswade Town 7
Cockfosters 1
Cockfosters got off to another poor start as Biggleswade eased
into a 2-0 lead within twelve minutes. Kevin Cooper scored his second
and Waders third before a Ben Andreos own goal completed a sorry first
45 minutes. 'Keeper Lee Walker never appeared for the second half
forcing Jack Chandler to take over the jersey. Although a much improved
second half performance, Dan O'Connor got one back but with a minute a
Gavin Conway own goal poured more petrol on the flames. Two goals in the
last few minutes compounded a miserable afternoon for the Reds.

Cockfosters 3
Thamesmead Town 5 (a.e.t.)
Cockfosters
battled hard in the tie against Thamesmead Town but were chasing the
game all night. Twice in normal time and once more in the added period,
Thamesmead had their noses in front only for Cockfosters to battle back
each time. Terry Mireku got the Reds back on track to make it 1-1;
Marcel Okuro forced the tie into extra-time and after Thamesmead had
gone ahead for the third time, Sean Shields made it all square once
more. Cockfosters should have made more of the extra man once Thamesmead
were reduced to ten after 85 minutes but it was not to be as
Thamesmead's Raphael Momodu completed a personal hat-trick with two late
extra-time goals. Match report to follow.....

Cockfosters 5 Haringey

Two
goals in the first ten minutes from Dan O'Connor and Dave
Pigden effectively indicated the eventual outcome of this
tie. Although Haringey had plenty of the ball, there
was little danger from their assaults on the Cockfosters
rearguard. Three goals early in the second half, Dan
O'Connor from the spot, Dave Pigden & Aaron Ewing, lifted
the spirits and ensured that Haringey had no way back. Match

Scoring
at Langford this afternoon was a personal milestone for Cockfoster's Jon
Moniatis as he brought his goalscoring tally to 200 senior goals for the

then 'Monnie' has made 256 league appearances and 86 cup games - a very
impressive record. Well done Jon...

Langford 6
Cockfosters 4
In
a bizarre game that might well have finished 10 - 10, Cockfosters fought
back from 6-1 down to gain some respectability. Both defences were
atrocious, and by half-time Langford were 3-1 ahead. The home side led
2-0 before Jack Chandler reduced the arrears before a gifted goal on the
stroke of half-time put Cockfosters on the back foot. Matters got worse
within 15 seconds of the restart and goal numbers 5 & 6 were not far
behind, Jon Moniatis started the revival with Dave Pigden and Michael
Casey getting on the scoresheet as Langford amazingly looked for the
final whistle. Match report to follow.....

Ferdinand Snubs Chalk Lane Offer....
When
a Cockfosters official, who shall remain nameless, spotted a young man
displaying obvious football talents at a local event, an approach was

Haringey Borough Youth 4
Cockfosters Youth 4
Cockfosters Youth Team had
their first run out of the season last Sunday when they played
Haringey Borough in a Friendly at Clitterhouse Playing Fields,
Hendon.Three periods of 30 minutes were played with the strong wind
creating a tough opponent in the first and third periods. Borough
took the lead in an even start to the game. After overcoming a
customary poor start Cockfosters started to show some good passing
and movement. It was a piece of individual brilliance by Sean that
evened the score. The second period gave Cockfosters the opportunity
to win the game with flowing football and plenty of chances. Marcel
gave Cockfosters the lead quickly followed by a Boxer penalty
finish.Wholesale changes were made with all players in the large
squad given at least 30 minutes to impress. The final period against
the wind saw Labby score. Several other chances should have been
finished to crown a good performance. However the Cockfosters
defence began to shake and panic under pressure. Borough took their
chances and amazingly equalised with 5 minutes remaining.
A decent start but the late
collapse of the Cockfosters defence must surely be of concern.

Probably a little easier than the
score might suggest having held a three goal lead until about 20

With what looked mainly like a first
team for the first half Cockfosters controlled the game quite
comfortably and had a 2 - 0 lead by the break, with goals from Dave
Pigden and Jon Moniatis.
With eight changes for the second
half Cockfosters continued to push forward and it was no surprise
when debutant Daniel Little increased the lead. In the later stages
we somewhat lost our shape conceding two goals in the final 20
minutes, the second from the penalty spot. All in all another very

In the first of the Pre-Season friendlies Cockfosters and an Enfield

his debut, after Aaron Ewing had set up the opportunity with a low cross
from the right. Both teams made constant changes throughout the game and
David Craig must have been satisfied with this opener.

On the eve of the tour 14 brave men quickly became 13 as under the thumb
gave a flimsy excuse that he couldn't travel. Undeterred the 13
met at stansted at 4am and the lager was soon flowing. Arriving at
Riga airport the 13 soon became 12 as village was refused entry because
of an expired passport. As we waved goodbye village uttered the
immortal words '' I knew I had forgotten to do something''.
As the 12 boarded the minibus to the hotel the guide warned of all sorts
of dirty deeds that occur in Riga after nightfall. What the guide
hadn't said was whatever you do do not climb the freedom fighters
monument in Riga square, the most sacred monument in Latvia. It
was here that paleface egged on by comrades martin jol, I'll fight
anyone and is that his real name managed to get arrested and carted off
to the cells with his 3 associates. Was the 12 going to become 11
with paleface facing deportation? Unfortunately despite our pleas
the Latvian police allowed paleface to stay with only a heavy fine being
issued.
So the tour rolled on. As the boys carried on drinking the F.A.
Cup final came and went in a haze of sambuca. Obviously too much
drink was consumed because that night turnover, H and don't call me
danny led by closed decided to become Pickford Removals.
The following morning the boys rooms were raided as security searched
for the missing lobby furniture i:e sofas. baby cots and plants.
After photographic evidence and CCTV was produced putting our boys in
the frame, the question being discussed was whether 4 more were heading
to the slammer. Shorty intervened totally tying security in knots
with his own brand of gobbledegook. Another fine was issued whilst
shorty was telling anyone who would listen [and some who wasn't] what
great respect he had for Latvia and all who lived there.
After checking out, the boys had a few last lagers before heading to the
airport and home. Everything was fine until we tried to check in
and H was told we was at the airport 24 hours early. Whilst 6'6 10
stone H gave his impression of basil fawlty having a nervous breakdown
the ryanair staff managed to transfer our party to the next flight out,
with H getting stung for the surcharge.
We managed to get home with no further mishaps.
Last word is thanks to H for organising the tour. Roll on next
year.

League Shield
Cockfosters U18
1 Cheshunt 'A' U18
3
The U18's bid to lift the League Shield in the Final
played at Dunstable Town, proved to be a major disappointment as they
went down 3-1. On a disgraceful playing surface, to be fair, the same
for both teams, Cockfosters inability to keep the ball meant that
headway against a determined Cheshunt side was limited. Cheshunt grabbed
the lead after 9 minutes and two goals in a minute just before the
half-hour effectively settled the game. Cheshunt were reduced to ten
just before half-time and although Cockfosters benefited territorially,
they rarely tested the Cheshunt 'keeper. Glen Farley had a goal ruled
out for offside after a lengthy discussion between the officials before
Jonathan Stokes eventually got one back three minutes before added time.

Colney Heath 1
Jamie
Brandon's goal 30 seconds from the end of normal time settled an
absorbing Final that could quite easily have gone either way.
Cockfosters had barely had a kick before Brandon gave the Reds the lead
after 33 minutes. At times both goals led a charmed life but
resolute defending and a bit of luck kept Colney Heath at bay until the
84th minute. With extra-time looming, Brandon spectacularly volleyed
home Andreos's free kick to lift the trophy for Cockfosters. Match

A

Despite leading 2-0 after just eight minutes,
Cockfosters managed somehow to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Jamil Gaawo twice got his head to corners as Cockfosters dominated. But
lapses at the back threw away the lead as Hertford roared back to level.
Early in the second half Hertford grabbed a third and then had to defend
continuously as Cockfosters laid siege to the home goal for the
remainder of the game. See Match report.....

minutes later, the roles were reversed but the outcome identical as
O'Connor set up the chance for Brandon to double the lead.

a.e.t.
Cockfosters are through to the Semi-Final of

Counties side Eynesbury Rovers. A long evening was inevitable as
two 'off-side' goals were disallowed and a penalty refused after Dan
O'Connor was scythed down. Cockfosters fell behind in the first half
when Chay Morris's clearance was

Brian Hitchings Cup
Bury Town Tie Jinxed......
It certainly appears that our Youth
team's Brian Hitchings Cup fixture against Bury Town Youth is jinxed.
Having made the 120 mile round trip last
month only for the referee to confirm what most of us thought, that
the pitch was frozen and dangerous, and postponed the game, we again
left Cockfosters just after 5.00 pm yesterday for the journey to
Bury.
Having heard and witnessed the usual
problems on the M25 between the A10 and M11, we then received
traffic reports that there was major problems on the M11 northbound
with about a 10 mile jam between Harlow and Stansted.
With this in mind we set off via the
North Circular to pick up the A12 at Gallows Corner and travel up
the A12 to just before Ipswich and then the A14 to Bury.
All sounded quite straight forward and
indeed it was until we reached Brentwood on the A12 where there had
been a bad crash resulting in the closure of the road.
Having sat motionless for 40 minutes, we
eventually started to move, however it was now almost 7.30 pm and
with the best will in the world arrival at Bury in under an hour was
not realistic.
So following a few hasty phone calls the
fixture was again postponed and now await information from the
league regarding any action that might be taken against us plus
hopefully a new date for this fixture.

It was not rocket science to presume that the U18's

PETER GREGORY - 1947 - 2007
It
is with great sadness that I must report the death yesterday of Vice
President Peter Gregory.
Peter collapsed in his office and was rushed to
the Whittington Hospital but it appears he had suffered a massive
heart attack.
He joined our Club as a young 15 year old in 1962
and played for many years mainly in our Reserve and 'A' teams.
Peter, his brother Martin and his late father Joe
were all great supporters of our Club. In fact it was mainly due to
Joe that we obtained our Bar licence in our old wooden pavilion back
in the mid sixties.
Peter was a Chartered Accountant running his own
company in Hornsey and for as many years as I can remember audited
our Club accounts.
He will be greatly missed by us all and we would
send sincere condolences to his wife Cheryl and all his family
members.

Ruislip Manor had to

Cockfosters burst into life and rapidly created a half-time lead through

it was Cockfosters hanging on to eventually scramble home 3-2.

me needed extra-time will remain a mystery. Although Cockfosters were
shaken by early goals at the start of each half, the home side largely
laid siege to the Sporting goal and the number of chances that went

a late leveller from Lee Barker and an extra-time winner from Dave
Pigden after Samson Okeke had scored the first, to secure Cockfosters

Mike Pratt 1944 - 2007
Sad regrets - it is with much
sadness that we have to report the sudden death in the early hours of
Sunday morning of Mike Pratt aged 63. He collapsed whilst doing a 'job'
he loved - 'cricket scoring' at our neighbours Cockfosters Cricket
Club.' He was rushed to hospital where he suffered a further heart
attack. Mike was a true local character, one of those people that clubs
like ourselves just cannot do without. He was a local lad having
attended Trent School & then Oakwood Secondary. Mike was a keen football
& cricket follower, travelling miles to watch games, he did not drive so
if a lift was not available, he would get to the venue by public
transport. His knowledge of grounds locations & directions to them was
probably unrivalled in this area. He also played in a local cribbage
league. Mike was a Cockfosters Cricket Club member for many years, then
in the 1970s when the cricket season ended he started to become involved
with our Club. Over the years Mike served on our committee, sold
progammes, worked behind our bar, managed/served in our kitchen on
matchdays & in our Herts Senior County League days he was a reliable
linesman for our Reserve Team games. A few years ago Mike became more
involved with our other neighbours - Southgate County Old Boys /
Southgate Compton Cricket Club. He has done tremendous work for them
behind the bar, & like his time with us, helped take the load off other
club officers. Mike - it was a privilege to have known you, rest in
peace & thanks for all the hard work that you did for our club & our
neighbouring clubs ........
